  • Reuse honesty. Some moulded cover gaskets survive a careful removal; many take a permanent set. Treat them as single-use unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise, because the second install is the one that leaks.

Avoid the temptation to fix a marginal fit with sealant. RTV squeezed into a moulded groove changes the compressed height of the gasket, and excess pushed inboard eventually breaks off and goes looking for an oil pickup. Tighten in the factory sequence, in stages. These are low-torque fasteners threading into aluminium, and they are easy to pull past yield. Work in the pattern and to the value given in the service manual, across two or three passes rather than one. Do not "give it a bit more" because you saw a weep - over-torqueing is what warps the cover in the first place.

Diagnose oil versus fuel before you blame the gasket. Oil weeping down the outside of the head is a cover-seal problem. Diesel odour in the oil, a rising oil level, or fuel found inside the cover area points at the injector return circuit instead, and a new perimeter gasket will not fix it. Sort the source first.
