What to Look For in a SBC 350 Harmonic Balancer
TL;DR: The harmonic balancer on a small block Chevy 350 is not a pulley — it is a tuned damper that absorbs crankshaft torsional vibration, and on some 350s it also carries a counterweight that is part of the engine balance. Get the balance type wrong and the engine shakes; get the damper construction wrong and the crankshaft pays for it over time. Three questions decide the purchase: whether your engine is internally or externally balanced, what damper construction the build needs, and whether the hub, snout fit and pulley pattern match the parts already on the engine. Confirm the exact part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your block, crank and accessory drive before ordering.
What the balancer actually does
Every time a cylinder fires, it twists the crankshaft. The crank winds up slightly, then unwinds — thousands of times a minute, at every rpm the engine sees. Those torsional pulses stack up into resonances, and at certain speeds a resonance can grow large enough to crack a crankshaft, wreck a timing set or beat out the front main bearing.
A harmonic balancer damps that. It is built as two pieces: an inner hub that keys onto the crank snout, and an outer inertia ring coupled to the hub through an energy-absorbing element. The ring lags the hub slightly under a torsional pulse, the coupling element flexes, and that motion turns into heat instead of into a resonance that keeps building.
That is why calling it a pulley is misleading. The pulley grooves are incidental. The part is a vibration control device that happens to drive the accessory belt, and a balancer that has lost its damping is doing none of the job it was installed to do — even if the belt still turns.
It also carries the crankshaft timing mark. Everything you set with a timing light depends on that mark keeping its correct relationship to the crank keyway, which matters later in this article.
Internal versus external balance: get this right first
This is the most common SBC 350 balancer mistake, and it will not announce itself until the engine runs.
A rotating assembly is balanced as a unit. On an internally balanced engine, all the correction weight lives on the crankshaft counterweights themselves, and the balancer is neutral — no offset weight. On an externally balanced engine, some of the correction is carried outside the crank, split between a weighted balancer at the front and a weighted flexplate or flywheel at the back.
Small block Chevy 350s exist in both configurations. The practical dividing line is the rear main seal design: the earlier two-piece rear main seal engines and the later one-piece rear main seal engines were not balanced the same way, and the one-piece engines use a balancer with a visible counterweight. The 400 small block is a third case again, with its own external balance weight that is not interchangeable with the 350 unit.
Do not buy on model year alone. Model years overlap, engines get swapped, cranks get replaced, and a 350 that has been rebuilt may not have the crank it left the factory with. Identify what is actually in front of you:
- Look at the rear main seal. A two-piece seal and a one-piece seal are visually obvious with the pan or transmission off, and they tell you which family the engine belongs to.
- Look at the old balancer. A neutral balancer is symmetrical. An externally balanced unit has an unmistakable heavy section.
- Look at the flexplate or flywheel. External balance is a matched pair, front and rear. If the flywheel carries a weight, the balancer should too.
- If the engine has been rebuilt, ask what it was balanced to. A custom-balanced rotating assembly follows the machine shop balance sheet, not the factory pattern.
Fitting a neutral balancer to an externally balanced engine, or the reverse, produces a vibration that gets worse with rpm and chews through main bearings. The honest summary for most 350s: a quality elastomer damper of the correct balance type is what the engine was designed around, and it is entirely adequate for a stock or mildly built street engine. The case for a friction or fluid damper strengthens as the build moves away from stock — more stroke, more compression, higher sustained rpm, or a crankshaft you cannot easily replace.
If the engine will see competition use, look for a damper certified to the SFI 18.1 specification. Many sanctioning bodies require it, and the certification also tells you the unit has been tested to stay together. Check the current certification listing for the specific part number rather than assuming a whole product line is covered.
Hub, fit and drive: the details that stop the job
A balancer that is correct on balance and construction can still be the wrong part for your engine.
Snout diameter and keyway. The hub is an interference fit on the crank snout and drives on a key. If the snout is worn, corroded or peened by a previous hammer installation, the new balancer will not seat properly. Inspect the snout before ordering.
Hub seal surface. The timing cover seal rides directly on the balancer hub. A groove worn into that surface by the old seal is a guaranteed front oil leak with a new seal, and it is the main reason a balancer job turns into a leak complaint. Some balancers are sold with a repair sleeve or a relocated seal surface for exactly this problem. Plan on a fresh front cover seal at the same time — they are in gaskets and seals.
Pulley bolt pattern and belt profile. Small block Chevys ran several accessory drive arrangements over the years, including different pulley bolt circles and both V-belt and serpentine setups. Match the new balancer to the pulleys you intend to run, not to a generic listing.
Outside diameter and thickness. SBC balancers were produced in more than one diameter and depth. Diameter changes the effective inertia and can change belt alignment and clearance; thickness changes where the pulleys sit relative to the water pump and accessory brackets. Measure the old part and compare before ordering.
Bolt or no bolt. Not every small block left the factory with a bolt through the balancer, though the cranks are commonly drilled and tapped for one. A correct bolt and washer, torqued to the value in the service manual, is cheap insurance against the balancer walking forward on the snout. Fasteners sit under accessories and hardware.
How to tell the old one is finished
An elastomer balancer rarely fails suddenly. It degrades, and the signs are readable:
- The timing mark has moved. If the outer ring has slipped on the rubber, the mark no longer corresponds to true top dead centre. Symptoms include an engine that cannot be tuned, detonation that does not track with what the timing light says, or a reading that is impossibly far advanced or retarded. Verify true TDC with a piston stop before trusting any balancer mark on an unknown engine.
- Visible rubber degradation. Cracking, crumbling, bulging, or rubber extruded past the edge of the ring. Rubber that has gone hard and glazed has stopped absorbing energy even when it looks intact.
- The ring is out of plane. Point a fixed reference at the outer edge and watch it at idle. A ring that wobbles or runs out has started to separate from the hub.
- Elongated or damaged keyway. Usually the result of running loose. If the keyway in the balancer or on the crank snout is damaged, the crank itself needs inspection.
- A new front seal that leaks immediately. Almost always the hub seal surface, not the seal.
- New vibration after any rotating-assembly work. Suspect a balance-type mismatch first.
A degraded damper is quiet about the damage it causes. The energy it should be absorbing goes into the crankshaft and the timing drive instead, which is why a tired balancer and a worn timing set so often turn up together.
Installation, briefly
Pull the old balancer with a proper puller that pulls on the hub — never on the outer ring, which will separate it from the rubber. Install the new one with a balancer installation tool that threads into the crank snout and draws the hub on squarely. Never drive a balancer on with a hammer. Hammering peens the snout, can damage the thrust bearing, and can ruin the new damper before it ever runs.
Check that the key is fully seated and undamaged, that the hub bottoms where it should, and that the pulleys line up with the water pump and accessory drive before final assembly. Torque any crank bolt in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual for your engine, and verify true TDC against the new balancer mark before setting timing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my 350 is internally or externally balanced? The most reliable field checks are the rear main seal design, whether the old balancer carries an offset counterweight, and whether the flywheel or flexplate carries one. Do not go by model year alone on a rebuilt engine — confirm what is physically on the crank, and if the assembly was balanced by a machine shop, follow their balance sheet.
Can I use a 400 small block balancer on a 350? No. The 400 uses a different external balance weight, and fitting it to a 350 introduces a vibration rather than cancelling one. Balance weights are specific to the rotating assembly they were calculated for.
Why did my timing mark move without me touching anything? The outer inertia ring has almost certainly slipped on degraded elastomer. The ring rotates relative to the hub, taking the timing mark with it, and every reading you take afterwards is wrong. Confirm true top dead centre with a piston stop and replace the balancer.
Do I need an SFI-rated balancer for a street 350? Not for street use. SFI 18.1 certification is required by many racing sanctioning bodies and is worthwhile insurance on a high-rpm or high-output build, but a quality elastomer damper of the correct balance type is what a stock or mildly built street 350 was engineered around.
Can I reuse the old balancer if it looks fine? Only after inspecting it properly: check the rubber for cracking and extrusion, check the outer ring for runout and for a timing mark that still corresponds to true TDC, and check the hub seal surface for a wear groove. If any of those are questionable, replace it — the part is inexpensive relative to a crankshaft.
Do I have to replace the front cover seal at the same time? It is strongly recommended. The seal rides on the balancer hub, and a worn or grooved hub surface will chew a new seal quickly. Since the front of the engine is already apart, fitting a fresh seal costs very little extra.
How long does the job take? On a small block Chevy with reasonable access, most shops treat balancer replacement as a short job — often under two labour hours once the belt and accessory drive are off. Add time if a radiator, fan shroud or condenser has to come out first, or if the crank snout needs cleanup.
