What it does

The ring and pinion set the final drive ratio -- how many turns of the driveshaft it takes to turn the wheels once. A numerically higher ratio trades top speed for acceleration and towing grunt; a worn or howling set means the gear mesh has failed. A correctly set-up new set restores quiet drive and puts the engine in the rpm range you actually use.
