600 HP Coyote Gen 3 Naturally Aspirated — The Honest Parts List
TL;DR: 600 naturally aspirated horsepower from a 5.0L Coyote is about 1.95 hp per cubic inch — the hardest specific output of any build in this series, harder than a 550 hp 347 Windsor and far harder than a 600 hp LT1. The Gen 3 is the right Coyote to attempt it on, because it arrives with the biggest bore, the highest compression and the only fuel system Ford put on this engine that has two injectors per cylinder. It reaches 600 through rpm, not through displacement, and that changes which parts matter: the oil pump gears and the valvetrain become the build, and the short block mostly does not.
1.95 hp per Cubic Inch Is the Real Story
Set the target beside the rest of the series and the difficulty is obvious.

Nothing else on that list is close. A 5.0L making 600 naturally aspirated horsepower is doing it the way a four-valve DOHC engine does everything: by turning more rpm and flowing more air per revolution than a pushrod engine of the same size can. That is genuinely achievable on a Coyote — it is the architecture Ford used for the Boss 302 and the Cobra Jet — but it means the parts that fail are rpm-related parts, not cylinder-pressure parts.
Start at the Coyote parts catalog, and read the generation section next, because on this engine the generation is not a detail.
Buy Gen 3, and Know Exactly Why
The Gen 3 (2018–2023) is the best naturally aspirated Coyote Ford built, and each of the reasons is also a parts-compatibility fact you will need later.
- Bigger bore. Gen 3 went to a 93.0 mm bore against 92.2 mm for Gen 1 and Gen 2, which is where the small displacement bump comes from. That is why Gen 1/2 and Gen 3 pistons, rings and head gaskets do not interchange.
- Higher compression. Gen 3 runs a meaningfully higher static compression ratio than Gen 1, made possible by the fuel system below. Compression you get for free is compression you do not have to buy pistons for.
- PFDI — port fuel and direct injection. Gen 3 carries both a set of port injectors and a set of direct injectors. This is the single most important fact on this page and it gets its own section.
- Bigger valves and revised port entry. Our own head listings note that Gen 1, 2 and 3 castings differ at port entry, which is why an intake manifold is generation-specific even when it looks identical.
The practical rule: check the generation before the brand, every time. Our Coyote camshaft listings state it outright — Gen 1/2/3 camshafts are not interchangeable — and the same is true of heads, intakes, gaskets, pistons and rings. A "Coyote" part is not a part number.
PFDI Is Why 600 N/A Is Possible — and Why the Catalog Cannot Fuel It Yet
The LT1 in the companion article has one fuel path and hits a wall when the high-pressure pump saturates. The Gen 3 Coyote has two: direct injection for the cool, dense, high-compression-friendly charge, plus port injectors that carry the load at high rpm and high demand where direct injection runs out of window. That dual system is exactly why a Gen 3 tolerates the compression and the rpm this build asks for.
Now the honest part. Here is what this catalog stocks against that system:

Every fuel injector in the Coyote catalog is a port injector for a Gen 1 or Gen 2 engine — which is to say, for the two generations that only have port injection. Not one row addresses the Gen 3 dual system, and every throttle body row stops at 2014. A Gen 3 owner filtering fuel injectors or throttle bodies on this site today will find parts that appear to fit a 5.0 Coyote and do not fit theirs.
For a 600 hp naturally aspirated Gen 3 this matters less than it would at 800 with a blower — a well-tuned Gen 3 will generally reach this power level on factory fuel hardware, which you should confirm against logged injector duty on your combination — but you should know the shelf is empty behind it, and you should not order a Gen 1/2 injector set because the title says Coyote.
The Oil Pump Gears Are the First Thing You Buy
If you take one part number away from this page, take this one.
The Coyote's factory oil pump gears are powdered metal, and they crack at sustained high rpm. That is not a rare failure and it is not a Gen 1 problem that Ford fixed — our own listing calls Gen 1 the highest-risk factory pump but stocks the upgrade for every generation, and describes billet gears as the non-negotiable Coyote upsell that installs on every rebuild. A 600 hp naturally aspirated build is an rpm build. Rpm is the exact input that breaks these gears.

Twelve oil pump rows exist across the platform; only two are Gen 3. The Melling, MMR and Ford Performance pump rows are all Gen 1 or Gen 2. Buy from oil pumps with the generation filter on, and read Coyote oil pump gear failure before you decide this is optional. It is not optional at 600 naturally aspirated horsepower.
Camshafts: Four Cams, Two Phasers, One Generation
A Coyote camshaft purchase is four camshafts. The engine is a dual-overhead-cam V8 with Ti-VCT phasing on both intake and exhaust cams on both banks, so there is no such thing as buying "a cam" for this engine — you buy a matched set of four, and the phasers have to work with them.

Four Gen 3 sets against seven for Gen 1 — the aftermarket is still catching up to the newest generation, and this is the shelf where that shows most. Our COMP listing names the intended duty as "power, high-RPM, Boss-spec grind, track duty," which is the correct description of what a 600 hp N/A combination needs.
Two cautions. First, the phaser and the timing set come with the cams, conceptually if not in the box. Ti-VCT phasers, chains and guides are wear items, and installing aggressive cams on a high-mile timing assembly is how a good cam package gets blamed for a rattle. Only two Gen 3 timing kits are stocked — Ford Performance CPP-FORD-COYOTE-G3-TIMING-FORDPERFOR-09 and Cloyes -CLOYES-10 — and they belong in the same order. See timing components.

Heads and Intake: One Choice Each, and That Is the Whole Story

Five head pairs exist for Gen 1 — Ford Performance ×2, Trick Flow, Livernois, Fox Lake — and six intakes exist for Gen 1 from Ford Performance, Trick Flow, Edelbrock, Sullivan and VMP. For Gen 3 there is exactly one of each, both from Ford Performance, and our own listings describe them as Cobra Jet-derived pieces aimed at naturally aspirated peak power and high-rpm flow. That is the right hardware for this build. It is also the only hardware, so there is no comparison shopping to do on the two biggest airflow items in a Gen 3 N/A combination.
Do not substitute across generations to widen the choice. The head listing states Gen 1/2/3 castings differ at port entry, and the intake listing states PFDI heads have different runner geometry — a Gen 1 intake on a Gen 3 head is a mismatched port, not a bargain. The Valvetrain Is Where an Rpm Build Lives
At 1.95 hp per cubic inch you are spinning this engine, and the valvetrain is what decides whether it survives. Two Gen 3 rows carry that load:

Thirty-two valves, because four per cylinder. That number is worth pausing on: a Coyote valve job is four times the valve count of a pushrod V8, and a Coyote valvetrain failure is proportionally more expensive.
What the catalog does not have for Gen 3: retainers. The only retainer row on the platform is CPP-FORD-COYOTE-G1-RETAINER-TRICKFLOW-04, a Gen 1 titanium set. There are no Gen 3 retainers, no rocker arms or finger followers, and no hydraulic lash adjusters anywhere in the Coyote catalog. Finger followers and lash adjusters are a known high-rpm Coyote wear point, and this is a real gap — see the gaps section below. Sort what does exist under valves and valvetrain.
The Short Block: Mostly Leave It Alone, With One Exception
The good news repeats from the LT1 article. A healthy Gen 3 short block, with its factory compression and factory rotating assembly, is generally adequate for 600 naturally aspirated horsepower at street rpm, within a sane rpm ceiling and depending on how the car will be used. You do not need to buy pistons to reach this number.
The exception is the connecting rod, and it is worth stating carefully. The Coyote's factory powdered-metal rod is widely regarded as the limiting part of the rotating assembly, and rpm is what loads it. A 600 hp N/A build that lives at 7,500 rpm on a road course is a different demand than a 600 hp street car that visits redline occasionally.
The catalog has zero connecting rods for any Coyote generation. No cranks and no rotating assemblies either. If your combination needs rods, this shelf cannot complete the build today, and that is the honest answer rather than steering you to a piston set instead.

What This Catalog Cannot Sell You Yet
- Connecting rods, crankshafts, rotating assemblies. Zero rows, any generation.
- Gen 3 retainers, rocker arms/finger followers, and hydraulic lash adjusters. Zero rows — a real gap on an rpm-focused build.
- Gen 3 fuel injectors, port or direct, and the high-pressure pump. Zero rows; all nine injector sets are Gen 1/2 port injectors.
- Gen 3 throttle body. Zero rows; all seven stop at 2014.
- Headers and long-tube exhaust. Zero rows. On an rpm build this is not trim.
- ARP head studs and main studs. No Coyote fastener rows.
- Oil pan, pickup and windage control. Nothing stocked, and sustained high-rpm and cornering loads are exactly when oil control decides whether the bottom end survives.
- The tune. Ti-VCT strategy, PFDI split and rev limit all have to be calibrated as one package.
