How to Convert an LML Duramax to CP3 (Full DIY Guide)
TL;DR: A CP3 conversion on a 2011–2016 LML Duramax replaces the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump — the truck's single biggest reliability liability — with the older, far more tolerant CP3 that GM used through the LMM. First: Is Your CP4 Already Gone?
This is the fork in the road, and getting it wrong is the expensive mistake on this platform. A CP3 conversion is a preventive upgrade. It is not a repair for a pump that has already shed metal.
When a CP4.2 fails, the cam follower scores its bore and the pump begins pushing steel particles downstream at rail pressure. Those particles travel one way — into the rails, through the high-pressure lines, into all eight injectors, out the return circuit, and into the tank. Bolting a clean CP3 onto a contaminated system means the new pump immediately starts ingesting the debris that is still sitting in the tank and return lines.

Choosing a Kit
Every reputable kit does the same four things: supplies a CP3 pump, adapts it to the LML front cover and gear drive, re-plumbs the high-pressure outlet to the factory rail, and provides the wiring pigtail so the ECM's pump-control output lands on the CP3's fuel control actuator. What differs is pump spec, line quality, and how much of the surrounding hardware is included.

Shop them side by side under fuel injection and pumps, and confirm year, cab, and emissions configuration on our fitment page — the 2011–2016 LML also appeared in Express and Savana vans with a different accessory layout, and kit coverage is not universal across chassis. Stock flow or stroker? A stock-displacement CP3 supports the factory injector set and moderate tuning comfortably. The Tune Is Not Optional
This is the part that catches first-timers. The LML's ECM meters fuel to the CP4.2 through its own inlet-metering strategy. A CP3 uses a different fuel control actuator with different current-versus-flow behavior. Drop a CP3 in on the factory calibration and the truck will either not build rail pressure correctly or will throw pressure-rationality codes as the ECM commands a valve that does not respond the way it expects.
Every conversion kit is sold on the assumption that a compatible calibration is loaded. Sort the tune out before you break the first fuel line, not after the truck is apart in the driveway.
Emissions and legal status: the compliance position on LML CP3 conversions is genuinely unsettled. The argument for it is that swapping one high-pressure fuel pump for another does not defeat any emissions control device. The argument against is that it requires an ECM calibration change, and calibration changes on an emissions-controlled vehicle carry their own regulatory weight. Check the current legal position for your jurisdiction and intended use before purchasing. Separately and unambiguously: DPF, EGR and SCR/DEF delete hardware is off-road and competition use only, and installing it on a road-registered truck is a federal violation in the United States. Cleanliness Is the Whole Job
Common-rail fuel systems fail on contamination, not on wear. Every open port gets capped the moment it is opened. Every fitting face gets wiped with a lint-free rag and clean diesel before it is assembled. No shop towels that shed. No compressed air blown into an open rail. No parts left uncovered while you go look for a socket.
The conversion succeeds or fails on how disciplined you are about debris.
The Install, In Order
Budget six to ten hours for a first-timer working alone. Refer to your kit's own instruction sheet for the specifics — the sequence below is the shape of the job, and kit designs differ in how the pump is driven and mounted.
- Relieve pressure and disconnect. Let the truck sit until the fuel system has bled down. Disconnect both batteries. The high-pressure side of a common-rail system holds serious pressure; do not crack a line on a truck that ran ten minutes ago.
- Remove the intake and accessories in your way. Intake duct, air-box plumbing, and whatever brackets sit between you and the front of the engine. Bag and label hardware by location.
- Drain and remove the fuel filter housing as required by the kit. Fresh filters go back in at the end.
- Disconnect the CP4.2. Electrical connector, low-pressure supply and return, and the high-pressure line to the rail. Cap everything immediately. Every port, every line end, no exceptions.
- Unbolt and remove the CP4.2. Support the pump as the last fastener comes out. Once it is on the bench, cut the inlet filter screen or inspect the pump internals if the kit permits — this is your free confirmation of whether the pump was already wearing. If you find scoring, stop and re-scope the job as a contaminated-system rebuild.
- Fit the adapter and drive. Install the kit's mounting adapter and pump drive gear or coupler per the instruction sheet. This is the step where kit designs diverge most; follow the manufacturer's alignment and timing instructions exactly. Take the pump-drive torque and any timing-mark procedure from your specific kit's documentation.
- Mount the CP3. New gasket or O-ring, torque to the kit's spec in the specified pattern. Do not substitute a generic torque value on an aluminum front cover.
- Plumb the high-pressure outlet. Route the kit's rail feed line without contact against anything that vibrates. High-pressure lines are single-use in most manufacturers' guidance and must not be bent to fit — if the line does not lie naturally, the routing is wrong, not the line. Tighten with line wrenches to the kit's spec.
- Connect low-pressure supply and return, then land the electrical pigtail on the CP3's fuel control actuator. Route the harness away from heat and moving parts and secure it properly.
- Do the fuel cooler now if you are doing it. With the front of the engine open, a relocation kit is a fraction of the work it would be later.
- Install fresh fuel filters and reassemble everything you removed. Walk the engine bay with your hardware bags in hand; every bag should be empty.
- Load the calibration. Flash the conversion tune before the first crank.
- Prime the system. Use the factory priming procedure to fill the low-pressure side before cranking. Do not dry-crank a new high-pressure pump — it is lubricated by the fuel it pumps.
- First start and leak check. Start, idle, and inspect every fitting you touched, hot. Then shut down, let it cool, and look again for weeps.
- Verify pressure control on a scan tool. Watch commanded versus actual rail pressure at idle, on a light throttle transient, and under load. They should track closely. If actual lags or hunts, shut it down and diagnose — that is the conversion telling you something is not right.
- Road test, then re-torque and re-inspect. Twenty minutes of mixed driving, then back in the driveway with a light for a second leak check. Cut the fuel filter open at the first service interval as a baseline.
After the Conversion
The CP3 is tolerant, not immortal. What kills high-pressure pumps in North America is thin, dry ULSD and water carried past a marginal filtration setup. Protect the new pump:
- Keep filtration honest. Change filters on schedule, and cut them open. A filter you never inspect is a diagnostic you are throwing away.
- Keep supply pressure consistent. An auxiliary lift pump feeding the CP3 removes the biggest variable in its life.
- Watch the fuel cooler. The LML cooler is a known leak point and dripping diesel into the valley is both a fire risk and a mess.
