TL;DR: Melling and Moroso both build LS oil pumps, and the two brands' high-volume units are functionally the same part in different castings — roughly 20% more displacement than stock, same gerotor architecture, same mounting. Boundary does not make an LS oil pump at all; Boundary's GM billet-gear work is on the Gen V LT1/LT4 front-crank pump, which is a completely different machine. The decisions that actually matter on an LS are standard-volume versus high-volume, powdered-metal gears versus billet gears, and whether the pickup tube is welded — and the pickup tube is what actually kills engines.


First, the correction: Boundary does not build an LS oil pump

This comparison gets searched constantly, and the premise is half wrong. Boundary Engineering's reputation in the GM world is real, but it was earned on the Gen V LT platform, not on the LS.

The two engines do not share an oil pump in any sense:

  • LS Gen III/IV uses a crank-driven gerotor pump bolted to the front of the block, behind the timing cover, fed by a bolt-on pickup tube from the pan. Fixed displacement. Pressure is capped by a spring-loaded relief valve inside the pump.
  • LT Gen V uses a front-crank-driven variable-displacement pump built into the timing cover, with output commanded by the ECM through a solenoid. It is a two-stage pump the calibration actively manages.

Boundary's GM product is a billet-gear upgrade for that LT1/LT4 variable-displacement pump, and the reason it exists is that the LT pump's gears — not its volume — are the weak link at high boost and sustained track duty. Boundary also builds pump and gear upgrades across the Ford Modular and Coyote families, which is where most of the brand's name recognition comes from.

Two things jump out of that table before any brand argument starts.

One: there is no Boundary row. That is the point of the section above.

Two: Melling is most of the table. That is not merchandising bias — it reflects who actually manufactures LS oil pumps.


What actually separates the brands

Melling is the OE-adjacent supplier, and the range is the product

Melling's LS line is the only one in the table covering both generations, both reluctor patterns, truck and car applications, standard and high volume, and a billet-gear race unit. Nobody else is close on breadth.

That breadth is the reason to shop Melling first on a stock-replacement or mild-build job: there is a Melling pump built for exactly your application, so you are not forced into a high-volume unit because the standard-volume version does not exist for your block. The 10296 is the everyday LS pump; the 10355 is its high-volume sibling on the same Gen III architecture; the truck-specific M295HV and M365HV cover the Gen III and Gen IV truck engines respectively.

The confusing part of Melling's catalog is that the same base number spans generations. A "10296" is sold for both a Gen III LS1 and a Gen IV 5.3 — the pumps are not the same, and the mounting and cover interface differ between Gen III and Gen IV. The suffix and the application listing carry that distinction, not the four digits. Check the generation on the fitment page, not the base number.

Moroso sells high-volume only, and that is a deliberate position

Moroso's LS coverage here is two part numbers — 22145 for Gen III and 22150 for Gen IV — and both are high-volume. There is no standard-volume Moroso LS pump, because Moroso is not trying to sell you a stock replacement.

That makes Moroso an easy brand to shop and an easy brand to buy wrong. If your engine needs a pump because the old one has 190,000 miles on it and the truck is otherwise stock, a high-volume pump is not the right answer — it is more pump than the engine's clearances were designed around, and it drives more oil to the top end than a stock pan and windage tray were laid out to return. Buy the standard-volume pump.

If the engine is built — cam past roughly 230 degrees, springs to match, a converter, and a habit of seeing 6,500 rpm — Moroso's HV units are a straightforward, well-made choice that competes directly with Melling's HV numbers on the same architecture. Between a Moroso 22150 and a Melling 10296HV on a built LS3 there is no performance argument worth having. Buy whichever one is in stock.

Improved Racing sells the gear, not the pump

Improved Racing's LS entries — EGM-300 and EGM-303 — are aimed squarely at LS3 and LS7 builds, and the meaningful one is EGM-303, the billet-gear unit.

Here is what that buys. A production LS oil pump uses sintered powdered-metal gerotor gears — dimensionally excellent, cheap to make in volume, and entirely adequate for factory loads. What powdered metal is not is tough. Under the shock loading of a high-rpm engine — oil aeration, a pickup momentarily uncovering in a corner, a cold start with thick oil — a powdered-metal gear can crack. When it does, the debris goes straight through the pump into the galleries, and the engine is finished.

A billet gear is machined from solid steel and it does not fail that way. It bends or it wears; it does not shatter into the oiling system.

That is the entire case for a billet-gear pump, and it is a durability case, not a power case. A billet-gear pump does not make more oil pressure than the same pump with powdered-metal gears. Melling's 10355HV-B and Improved Racing's EGM-303 are both this product. If the pump is coming off a high-rpm LS3 or LS7 anyway, the upgrade is insurance at the moment it costs nothing extra in labor.

BTR, Texas Speed and Summit are relabeled pumps

Three rows in the table — BTR-OP-HV, TSP-OP-LS1, SUM-LS-OP — are house-branded pumps. Our own BTR listing states outright that it is Melling-sourced.

There is nothing wrong with a relabeled pump; it is the same casting in a different box. But it means the brand name on the outside tells you nothing the volume rating and generation do not already tell you, and it means you should shop these on availability and on whether the application listing exactly matches your engine — not on brand.


Standard volume vs high volume: the decision most people get backwards

High-volume LS pumps move roughly 20% more oil per revolution than standard. That is the whole difference. It is not more pressure — pressure is what happens when flow meets restriction, and the relief valve caps it either way.

More volume helps when the engine's demand for oil has genuinely gone up: more rpm, more bearing clearance from a fresh machining job, a high-lift cam working a stiff spring package, or added consumers like a turbo feed.

More volume hurts, or at best does nothing, when the engine is stock. Extra oil pushed to the top end drains back through the same holes, and on a stock pan it can leave more oil hanging in the heads and on the crank than the windage tray was designed to manage. It also takes more crank horsepower to drive.

The honest rule:

  • Stock or near-stock engine, stock rpm limit → standard volume. Melling 10296, GM 12612289, Summit SUM-LS-OP.
  • Cammed street engine, spring package, occasional 6,500 rpm → high volume. Melling 10296HV / M365HV, Moroso 22145 / 22150, BTR-OP-HV.
  • Race, sustained high rpm, LS7-style loads, or a fresh build you do not want to open again → high volume with billet gears. Melling 10355HV-B, Improved Racing EGM-303.

A cam swap is the most common reason an LS owner ends up in the middle row of that list — and if the front of the engine is already open for a timing set, the pump decision is essentially free labor.


The pickup tube kills more LS engines than the pump does

If you take one thing from this page, take this one.

The LS oil pickup tube is press-fit into the pump and bolted to a main cap, sealed with an O-ring. It is not welded from the factory. Under vibration and sustained high rpm that press-fit joint can work loose — and the moment it does, the pump draws air instead of oil. Oil pressure disappears in under a second, and so do the bearings.

This is a known LS failure mode, it is not exotic, and the fix is cheap: weld the pickup tube to the pump housing before the pan goes on, or buy a tube that is already welded. Rules that go with it:

  • Always use a new O-ring. The old one is compressed, and it is the seal that keeps the pump from drawing air.
  • Match the tube to the pan depth. A stock-depth tube in a deep pan sits too far off the oil and uncovers under acceleration; a deep tube in a stock pan can contact the pan floor.
  • Weld it, or buy it welded, for anything that sees sustained rpm above roughly 6,500.
  • Do this while the engine is apart. Nobody drops a pan twice on purpose.

How to choose, in order

Gate 1 — Generation and reluctor. Gen III is 24x, Gen IV is 58x, and the pump-to-cover interface differs between them. Get this wrong and nothing else on this page matters.

Gate 2 — Car or truck. The truck-specific Melling numbers (M295HV, M365HV) exist because truck blocks and pans are not car blocks and pans. Match the application string, not just the displacement.

Gate 3 — Volume, honestly. Answer "what is my actual redline and what is my actual bearing clearance" before you answer "standard or high-volume." Most street LS engines want standard.

Gate 4 — Gear material. Only worth paying for on a high-rpm or race build. Below that it solves a problem you will not have.

Gate 5 — Then pick a brand. By this point Gates 1–4 have usually narrowed you to two or three part numbers that all do the same thing. Buy the one in stock.


Frequently asked questions

Does Boundary make an LS oil pump?

No. Boundary Engineering's GM oil pump work is on the Gen V LT1 and LT4 front-crank variable-displacement pump, plus a range of Ford Modular and Coyote pumps and gear upgrades. The LS Gen III/IV pump is a different architecture entirely — crank-driven, fixed displacement, mounted to the front of the block. For an LS, shop Melling, Moroso or Improved Racing.

Is a Moroso LS pump better than a Melling?

Not in any way you can measure on a comparable part. Moroso's 22145 and 22150 are high-volume pumps on the same gerotor architecture as Melling's HV units, with the same roughly 20% volume increase. The practical difference is catalog breadth: Melling covers standard volume, truck applications and both generations, while Moroso's LS line is high-volume only.

Do I need a high-volume oil pump for a cam swap?

Usually not on its own. A cam alone does not change bearing clearances. What pushes you toward high volume is the combination — a bigger cam, a stiff spring package, higher sustained rpm, and a fresh bottom end with looser clearances. A stock-clearance 5.3 with a mild truck cam is fine on a standard-volume pump.

What is a billet-gear oil pump actually for?

Failure containment, not pressure. Production LS pumps use sintered powdered-metal gears, which can crack under shock loading and send debris through the entire oiling system. Billet steel gears do not fail that way. It is a durability upgrade for high-rpm and race engines, and it makes no additional pressure.

Do I have to weld the LS oil pump pickup tube?

For a stock engine at stock rpm, no. For anything that sustains rpm above roughly 6,500, yes — treat it as mandatory. The factory press-fit joint can loosen, and when it does the pump draws air and the bearings go within seconds. Weld it, or buy a pre-welded tube. Use a new O-ring either way.

Can I reuse my old pickup tube with a new pump?

Only with a new O-ring, and only if the tube is undamaged and the correct depth for your pan. The tube is the cheapest part in the job and it is the one that fails. Replacing it while the pan is off is the right call.

Is the GM OEM pump good enough?

For a stock or lightly modified Gen IV engine, yes. GM 12612289 is a standard-volume pump built to the specification the engine was designed around. The reason to move off it is a build that genuinely demands more volume or tougher gears — not a general belief that aftermarket is automatically better.
