What it does

The differential lets the wheels turn at different speeds through a corner while still sending power to both. An open diff gives up the moment one tyre loses grip; a limited-slip or locker keeps both wheels driving, which is the difference between working and being stuck. A worn carrier also lets the gears walk out of mesh.
