What it does

The wastegate bleeds exhaust past the turbine so boost stops where it is supposed to. A stuck or leaking gate either overboosts the engine, which is how head gaskets and pistons die, or creeps and never makes target. A correctly sized gate holds the boost curve the tune expects.
